Psql uses libpq, most dbapi adapters do, too, so yes.

That might actually be an argument against writing a *pure*
Python DB-API adaptor: it seems the various authentication
modes would have to be implemented ?

Well, yes, that's how one would expect things to work. So,
that's good.
