BTW, the much harder to solve, inherent problem with all
those nice editors is that replacing a placeholder which
needs to output a *list* or *table* would require writing
dedicated code which represents such structures in the
domain language of the editor's file format.

Considering that one will want to be able to apply stylistic
elements (bold, size, color, to name just a few) inside
table cells or list elements this amounts to partially
rewriting the word processor.

LaTeX (or TeX, rather) being a plain text orientied
application makes that a lot easier (due to the language
being extremely well defined and explicitely text format
oriented). It is fully agreed that this has a learning
curve. One either pays in time to learn it or pays in money
to have it done for oneself.
