This pretty much rules out using GNUstep for a popular Mac OS X application.
There _was_ a point when GNUstep worked with NeXT/Apple runtime. GNUstep is a thin layer/extension to Cocoa then. No backend needed, but source is fully compatible with other GNUstep platforms.
