The real issue is the gratuitous/frivolous SONAME bump when there are
only API additions. Users and distributors are forced to recompile
everything unnecessarily and this can be painful (especially for the
latter).
Certainly, detecting whether a particular change leads to an ABI break is
not always easy, and not bumping the SONAME when there are incompatible
changes does far more harm.
