Could you please have a look at my buffers-redux branch. So far it seems 
to suit Nikos. I have taken care of most of the send path, discarding 
old code with much shorter and simpler new code (and adding a bunch of 
generic code).

The read path is next and I would like to finalize the write side as 
much as possible. Also, I would like to remove the need to peek data 
from sockets. This complicates the read side by an order of magnitude. 
Is this because there is no other way to notify the application to do 
another read (via select) ?
