You probably didn't download it properly - I bet you've got HTML pages
instead of the files you were trying to download (clicking on file links
at sourceforge.net gives you a mirror selection page, it's not a direct
link to the file).

Actually, I right clicked and saved link as. I use firefox, and this seems
to be the best way to download.
