I do not understand this. Looking at the man page, all env seems to
do is run the command with a changed environment,
# man env
env [OPTION]... [-] [NAME=VALUE]... [COMMAND [ARG]...]
Set each NAME to VALUE in the environment and run COMMAND.
But your usage does not change the environment. So what is it doing and
why is it better?
