As to where it's coming from, I don't know. It may be a deliberate design decision by the X font designers, in order to achieve the pleasing joined-up effect (I see you're using an Apple ... !).
Hmm, can you tell me how the groff metrics were generated for the X fonts, or are these inherited from pre-groff days? The Times fonts used by X (on OSX or anywhere else, I'm guessing) are pcf fonts - how can the groff metrics be generated from these?
I suppose an alternative would be to switch to Type 1 or Truetype fonts for X display, and use afmtodit to generate the metrics (would that work?) - but even thinking about installing X fonts gives me a headache...
