I'd recommend POSIX make(1) together with POSIX sh(1), that usually
works quite well. Of course, when testing C interfaces, some bits
and pieces of ISO C code are needed, too.

Sure, that's fine. Whatever catches regressions and is easy to
understand and maintain.
