OK.

So now that we (may) think that we know what we want to do.  Who
should do it?  If you or Martin want to make the changes, that'd be
great, but if you don't think you'll have time for it soon, I'd be
happy to try and fix it myself, if you might be able to help if I get
stuck :>

By "fix" I mean add Martin's patch, write a gentemp function, switch
syncase to use gentemp, and figure out how we want to write gensym
symbols (this last bit still seems to be undecided).
