yeah, i remember this discussion now...  hmmm.

   Also, if it's not urgent, you might want to hold off on any serious
   auto* changes -- I'll be committing some stuff soon (day or so)
   that'll touch a number of those files, though I believe nearly all
   these changes relate to .so version handling.

great!  i am eagerly awaiting these changes, to learn from them, in
order to DTRT for guile-1.4.1.
