as far as I can see.

And I get the same results for builds on:
 sun4u sparc SUNW,Sun-Blade-100 Solaris
 sun4u sparc SUNW,Ultra-250 Solaris
both Solaris 2.9, both gcc-4.1.0, both binutils-2.17

Maybe I need to give the .a files to ranlib?  I thought the install did that.
