Eww. Please don't use LD_LIBRARY_PATH.

Your best bet is to run configure with:
--with-openssl=/usr/local/ssl
If that doesn't work for you, let me know. I don't have access to
my work environment now, but I can check how I built it tomorrow.
I have openssl installed in a non-standard location...
