All:
Thanks for assistance from those who replied.
After taking IP traces of LPR, I realized that the content of the postscript
generated by ps-print was the culprit. I could LPR /etc/refcard.ps, but
not anything from emacs. I have an older HP Laserjet 4Plus, and although
the LPR protocol worked fine, it didn't print. I zapped the version of
ps-print (6.x), and reverted to a 4.x version and after several days of jacking
around, I can print postscript again.
Perhaps, for compatibility the older versions of
ps-print should be included, or better yet a customization option which provides
backward compatibility. (I'm looking into upgrading the firmware on the printer
itself as well).
Thanks,
Jeff
