I am running a Debian, too, BTW.

Of course you would. I thank you very much for trying the gift which
is doubtlessly due to David and Henning being down under :-).
A quick fix should be that you add /usr/local/lib to your
LD_LIBRARY_PATH
Another (much nicer :-) ) fix is that you try getting the current
development version from CVS on savannah.gnu.org.
The advantage for me: I can release 0.1.6, if it works at your place,
as some compiling problems like yours kept me from releasing it (they
are probably fixed now).
The advantage for you:
1) you really have the newest stuff possible.
2) no fiddling with LD_LIBRARY_PATH, as I have learnt a lot more about
libtool in the meantime.
To get things from CVS surf to:
http://savannah.gnu.org/projects/gift
...and click on the link CVS repository, which brings you to:
http://savannah.gnu.org/cvs/?group_id=31
Now Follow the instructions on that page for anonymous CVS:
cvs -d:pserver:address@hidden:/cvsroot/gift login
(press enter instead of password)
cvs -d:pserver:address@hidden:/cvsroot/gift co gift
Then it takes a little while, and you will be informed which files are
downloaded into the directory "./gift".
Things should compile without having you fiddle around with
anything. Please tell me (or bug-gift, that is), if this does not
work.
While I hope setting the environment solves your problem, I hope I
have motivated you to use the CVS and help me debugging :-)
Regards,
Wolfgang
