Question on highlight replace function

Hi Fellow Emacs Users,

Is there a way to make Emacs do a delete/replace when I highlight something?

For example, if I highlight a method name, then want to overwrite it, I have to 
do C-w then type in the new name.  What I'd like is if I could highlight the 
name, then type the new name rather than having to do C-w first.
