How turn off repositioning of text like when coding?

I thought this would turn off all Emacs modes...

(setq auto-mode-list       ()       )

and it probably is working but I still have Emacs
repositioning text when I'm coding.  Emacs moves
things I type according to the way Emacs thinks
lines of code should be structured.  For example,
it has set ideas about how much lines should
be indented that it enforces.  
How do I turn this type of thing off???
