As I recall, if time display is turned on emacs also checks for new mail
and displays info next to the time when new mail arrives.  Is this the
junk that you are referring to?  If there is other junk then that has
been added since I last used this feature back on ver. 19.30.
In the past when I have had display time enabled in the emacs mode line
I had the following in my .emacs.  

(setq display-time-mail-file "/dev/null")

This tells emacs to look at the null device for the mail file.  This
does not stop emacs from looking for new mail but it prevents it from
finding any and is, unless something has changed since 19.30, the only
way that I know to prevent emacs from displaying anything when new mail
arrives.

modeline customization often involves display-time-string
or some equivalent that tells the time on modeline.
         
You'll notice this string has other elements in it
besides time.  How do you remove these and JUST display time????
