You can achieve exactly what you want with VNC (www.realvnc.org).
It is like screen for X. It creates its own virtual X server.
It works with all kind of UNIXes and almost any operating system
(there is even a version for the Palm). I work with it for more
than 3 years locally and over the Internet (with SSH). I recommend
the use of the thightvnc (www.tightvnc.org) client.
