Character size and face in Emacs

Hi, everyone.

I'm typing a TeX document with Emacs, and don't manage to change at my
pleasure
the size and face of the characters in the text. I tried in Edit->Text
Properties,
but didn't manage to change anything. What are the exact steps?
On my PC there is Mandrake Linux 9.0.
Any help about this?
