NYC LOCAL: Tuesday 20 January through Friday 23 January, 2004: Perl, LWE

From: secretary
Subject: NYC LOCAL: Tuesday 20 January through Friday 23 January, 2004: Perl, LWE, K. Knopper at NYLUG, Gale Brewer at BOF, Howard Elmer at MuSIG
Date: 20 Jan 2004 04:38:38 -0500

This week there are many events, of various scales and kinds.

This message is a portmanteau announcement, and contains notices of several
different events.

One important event will be the Birds of a Feather meeting with
New York City Council member Gale Brewer, Oregon legislator Phil Barnhart,
organizer Ed Black, and Novell vice-president Jeff Hawkins at 5:45 pm
Thursday 22 January 2004, inside the Javits Convention Center. Today,
New York City has signed massive lock-in contracts with computer hardware
vendors. If we do not roll back the lock-in provisions of these
inequitable contracts, New York City school children will continue to
suffer the absurd constrictions and torsions of source secret software for
years to come. If you can only make one of this week's events, this is the
one to come to. Official information below.

The Perl Seminar will meet Tuesday 20 January 2004.
Sal Denaro and Jim Keenan will speak.
Official announcement below.

Of course, GNU/LinuxWorldExpo is in town this week. To register go to

http://www.linuxworldexpo.com/linuxworldny/V40/index.cvn?ID=10127

Both NYLUG and the Free Software Foundation will have booths in the DotOrg
Pavilion. Below find NYLUG's call for volunteers.

NYLUG will meet 22 Wednesday 2004 at IBM on 57th Street and Madison Avenue.
Nils Magnus and Klaus Knopper, of GNU/LinuxTag and Knoppix, will speak.
Official announcement below.

NYCBUG will throw a BOF on Thursday 22 January 2004.
Marc Spitzer will preside, starting at 5:45 pm.
Official announcement below.

The Free Software Foundation will host a number of events in New York
between January 20 - 23, 2004. For further information:

Subject: Tues Jan 20 Perl Seminar NY Agenda

As is customary, Perl Seminar NY will meet on the third Tuesday of the
month -- but remember that this month ny.pm will have a special talk by
Dan Sugalski on Parrot at Morgan Stanley.

 The perlsemny details:

 Tuesday, January 20, 2004, 6:15 pm
 NYPC Users Group
481 8 Ave (Ramada New Yorker hotel)
 Suite 1560
 between West 34 & 35 Sts, Manhattan

 Two presentations:

 1.  Sal Denaro:  "Net::LDAP"

What is Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP), what should you
use it for and what should't you use it for. And how it differs from
 Relational Database Management (RDBM) systems.

How to use NET::LDAP to abstract login and user management from your
applications. Issues with command line and cgi apps. Issues in migrating
to SSO environments. Some LDAP tricks and traps. How to make use of MS
 ADS without wanting to kill.

 2. Jim Keenan: "Cookin' with Tom & Nat"

David Adler kept pestering the New York Perlmongers to write reviews of
the books O'Reilly & Associates was sending him. Tonight, Jim gives a
brief tour of the second edition of "The Perl Cookbook" by Tom
Christiansen and Nat Torkington. Should you buy the second edition if
you already own the first? Come and find out!

 ------------------------------------------------------------------------

The annual LinuxWorld Conference & Expo is next week. It will be at the
Jacob K. Javits Convention Center, in Manhattan, New York City. It spans
from Tuesday through Friday January 20 - 23. The New York Linux Users
Group (NYLUG.org) will have a strong presence, as always. Our booth is
staffed, and manned by volunteers, good folks such as yourself. Please
read on, and come forth to lend a helping hand by volunteering!

All levels of users are welcome, newbie to wizard. You can hand out
printed information, glad hand with visitors, talk tech with inquiring
users, bond with new friends, flirt with the pretty girls in the booth
next to yours, etc. All while taking time off to wander the exhibits and
 get your fill.

  - We need help in setting up, lugging items around at Javits on Jan. 20.
  - On the 21, 22, 23 of Jan. we will man the booth, and is when the
exhibit floor opens to the general public.

Those helping with set-up on the 20th will have the first shot at
 goodies, swag of good value.

As a further show of gratitude volunteers will receive one of the new
 redesigned NYLUG.org T-shirts.

Exhibit-only passes, registration is free, and entitles you to a not
publicized one-year Dr. Dobbs Journal magazine subscription. Another
 plus.

NYLUG.org will be stationed in the ".ORG Pavillion". Come help, come
visit. Get involved! Be a part of the Linux Community!

 When Is The Volunteer Rendez-Vous?

Volunteers will meet Tuesday, January 20, 4:30PM at the Statue of Jacob
 K. Javits (indoors) in the south section of Javits Center, on the ground
 level.

You shouldn't need a badge to assemble. We will get everyone a badge in
order to walk onto the show floor and set-up the booth.

We will rig the LinuxWorld booth, set-up our server, and take first
crack at the swag. Including Prentice Hall books (from the Open Source
Series), as well as redesigned Linux T-shirts. Anyone who doesn't have a
badge will also receive a show coupon which enables free registration to
 the exhibits for the week.

If I can't make the Volunteer Rendez-Vous on Tuesday, Can I still Help Out?

Yes! Of course. We have Jan. 21-23 to fill with volunteer duties,
privileges. If you haven't yet done so, register online for a free
Exhibit-only pass, then pick-up your pass at Javits, walk onto the
Exhibit floor, wander to the .ORG Pavillion, to the NYLUG booth, and say
 "Boo!"

As a for instance, you could plan to give your time in 4 hour spans. Say
8:00AM-12:00PM, or 12:00PM-5:00PM. On one day, or every other day, or
all 3 days. In the afternoons, or mornings, etc. Perhaps one full day,
 and so on.

Regardless, share yourself with the crowd as you help.

 What is Linux?

It is a Unix-like operating system. Specifically, Linux is an
independent POSIX implementation of the Unix operating system. Linux is
licensed under the terms of the GNU General Public license (GPL). It
includes true multitasking, true multiuser capabilities, virtual memory,
shared libraries, demand loading, proper memory management, TCP/IP
networking, copy-on-write exectables, and other features consistent with
Unix-type systems. For more information, take a look at the Linux FAQ:

Magnus & Klaus Knopper on Knoppix Linux, and LinuxTag

 January 21st, 2004
 Wednesday
 6:30PM-8:00PM
 IBM Headquarters Building
590 Madison Avenue at 57th Street
12th Floor, home to the IBM Linux Center of Competency

 ** RSVP Instructions **
Unless you have already rsvp'ed for a prior meeting, everyone

** Note Meetings Are On the 12th Floor **

Nils Magnus & Klaus Knopper (Knoppix Linux)
                                     -on-
                          Knoppix Linux, and LinuxTag

New Linux distributions come fast and furious out of the production
chute---a well understood virtuous trait for the little OS kernel---all
the time. Sometimes though a special thing happens. You recognize signs
of it, you know it when you see it. When someone taps you on the
shoulder during Stammtisch at the most inopportune time to discuss
Knoppix, say. ``Golly, these users are fervent,'' you realize.

Knoppix is a child project of LinuxTag, Europe's major Linux and free
software conference. 2004 is to be LinuxTag's tenth year: June 23-26,
Karlsruhe, Germany. Nils Magnus, and Klaus Knopper from LinuxTag, and
Knoppix Linux developers will present at the January 21st New York
Linux Users Group (NYLUG.org) monthly meeting.

They will discuss two topics. (1.) An introductory portion on LinuxTag,
a volunteer run melange between a hacker conference and a major
corporate expo. Now that future LinuxWorld Conference & Expo 2005 will
take place in Boston, the nitty gritty details of launching and running
a major *nix, free software, open source software conference are
welcomed, especially volunteer-powered as they do it. (2.) The major
portion of the meeting will focus on the Knoppix Linux distribution.
Knoppix is a Linux that runs from CDROM. Although it is installed to
disk if you so choose. Many avid users choose.

Knoppix is a complete Linux distribution running off a CDROM. Knoppix
has a tremendous impact on Linux usability especially for first time
Linux users. "Just boot it" is the slogan for almost 2.0 GB ready to
use software from a single CD, thanks to an on-the-fly-decrompression
scheme that even speeds up the booting. Knoppix comes with extensive
hardware detection, supports writing persistent data on USB memory and
can be used for data recovery as well as for Linux classes in schools
    or at LUG gatherings.

Klaus, the principal maintainer and mastermind of Knoppix will talk
about the painful migration to 2.6 kernels, supported hardware, erring
vendors giving out no proper documentation about their products and
    future plans of Knoppix.

You might ask, what is the power in doing real work that you can't
save? Between the `live CD', and the `install it to disk' usage methods
there is a third way. Using a USB pocket drive, or other removable
media you can hit-and-run anyone's machine, doing real work all while
using your in-hand defaults, but more importantly storing your new
work. These tripod benefits is why one individual wouldn't let another
    recycle peacefully. But---I understand.

Importantly on the homefront, January 2004 marks the fifth anniversary
for the New York Linux Users Group. A great achievement---Happy
    Birthday!---and many more.

Knoppix. He works as a freelance engineer and consultant for Free
Software Integration. He lives in Kaiserslautern, Germany.

Nils Magnus is program chair of the LinuxTag Free Conference. Nils
works as Senior Consultant for information security for secunet
Security Networks AG in Hamburg, Germany. He is a speaker and columnist
about security management, vulnerabilty assessment and computer
    forensics.

GPG cryptography. Immediately after the presentation and continuing
at Stammtisch we will be gathering for a keysigning. For those who
already have keys, please remember to bring paper printouts of your
40-character key fingerprint, as per the instructions in our howto
docs. If you haven't created a key yet, and for keysigning details,

----- Forwarded message from Hans Zaunere <hans@nyphp.com> -----
 From: "Hans Zaunere" <hans@nyphp.com>
Subject: NYC *BSD User Group Launch: http://www.NYCBUG.org/

We have founded a new *BSD User Group in New York City, the New York
City BSD Users Group (<http://www.NYCBUG.org/>, pronounced "nice-bug").
It is our goal to make this B.U.G. a longtime success, and a permanent
bright fixture in the skyline of New York City Metro's I.T. technical
 communities.

There are two goals for this new user group.

First, to provide a forum for the many BSD users in New York City to
discuss and debate topics of interest to the BSD community.

Second, to provide a bridge to users interested in learning more about
or expanding their knowledge of the BSD family.

 - Our kick-off event will be a free "birds-of-a-feather" session at
LinuxWorld Conference & Expo, at the Jacob Javits Center on Thursday,
January 22nd, at 5:45pm, Room 1E15. We will have a presence at
various tables at the expo, including those of BSDMall and New York
    PHP.

 - Our first monthly meeting will present on, "Secure by Default:
Learning from OpenBSD," will be held on Wednesday, February 4th at
7:00pm in the offices of: SageSecure, 116 West 23rd Street and 6th
    Avenue, on the fifth floor.

Presented by Wes Sonnenreich, author of "Building Linux and OpenBSD
Firewalls" and "Network Security Illustrated." This talk will deal
with crucial security concepts and best practices for today's
     computing environments.

Subsequent monthly meetings will take place at 7:00pm on the first
    Wednesday of the month.

Our website is located at <http://www.NYCBUG.org/>.

o NYCBUG will include a joint documentation project with New York PHP
(<http://www.NYPHP.org/>) and OpenlySecure.org, focused on providing
original documentation to new and experienced BSD users alike.

o NYCBUG also provides community mailing lists to assist in discussion
and learning about the BSD world. Interested users, please join the
    mailing list(s) at <http://www.NYCBUG.org/mailinglist.html>.

NYCBUG is open to all interested individuals, including, but not limited
to, users of FreeBSD, NetBSD, OpenBSD, DragonFlyBSD, OpenDarwin, Darwin
 and Mac OSX.

Since the origins of the Berkeley Software Distribution (BSD) Unix in
the 1970's, BSD has been a consistent force among the backroom servers
of the world, powering internet service providers, hosting firms, and
web sites such as Yahoo! and 2600.com. NYCBUG works to assist current
users, those interested in learning more about this fundamental
operating system family and various other BSD projects, and to provide a
 channel for community interaction.

We look forward to supporting the BSD community in a variety of ways in
the coming months and years. Please join us in making NYCBUG a success.
 E pluribus unum.

We kindly endorse the distribution of this announcement among your
colleagues, and potential *BSD users. Thank you.
