help spacing left gutter

Hello-

I would like to change the width of the left "gutter" in my emacs
(21.3). Is this possible? I'm speaking of the little gray strip that
runs on the left and right sides of the terminal where text will not
go. Alternatively, I would like to indent the left without actually
inserting spaces in the file.

Any help would be great. Thanks.
