Any ideas on what to set?

When you've launched GNU Emacs from /a/b/c/d you should not rename any directory above d. Every application will get confused when it sees that its working directory has vanished. Yes, Emacs still thinks it is at home in /a/b/c/d and it won't learn /a/b/x/d because /a/b/c/ d is 'hard wired' in memory, inside the process.

So there is nothing to set, but something to leave, i.e. not to perform.
