iswitchb not working

Hi all,
I am running emacs 23.0.0.1. and am trying to get iswitchb running. The
following line appears in my .emacs:
(iswitchb-mode 1)
When I type C-x C-b, I get the default emacs buffer list when I should
get iswitchb. However when I t ype C-x b, iswitchb runs fine. Shouldn't
it work both ways?
