The display is normal outside GNU Emacs – it is colouring file, directory, sym-link, and other special files' names. Turn that off in GNU Emacs (a file ~/.emacs_<your shell's name> could do this in that shell's syntax), or make ls to be aliased to a form that does emit these ANSI escape sequences.
