minor mode for displaying embedded images in file

Hi all,
   a while ago I asked for a minor mode that enabled the display of images in
files. The intention is to put URL to diagrams in program source files.
I'm not sure whether my post made it out to the world, but anyhow I've got no
replies.

In the meantime, the best I could find is 
http://www.netlaputa.ne.jp/~kose/Emacs/iimage.html,
but this package doesn't seem to be actively maintained and doesn't work for
me: it plays badly with extents/overlays, destoyes the cursor and make semantic 
crash.

But that is exactly the functionality I'd need. Anybody with a pointer to more 
recent
developments in the area?
