I launch it from an xterm (meaning literally xterm).

Hmmm...what GTK version do you have on Disbuntu?

Does Emacs still launch?

Here's what happens to me:
,----
| /home/joel: Zshell> ssh joel@none-of-your-business.org
| joel@noyb.org's password:
| Last login: Tue Mar 11 19:41:11 2008
| Linux 2.6.21.5-smp.
|
| If you don't have time to do it right, where
| are you going to find the time to do it over?
|
|
| rugby, n:
| Elegant violence.
|
| (Rugby players eat their dead.)
| (Blood makes the grass grow!)
| (Support your local hooker! Play rugby!)
|
| [A "hooker" is part of the scrum. Thought you'd want to know. Ed.]
|
| /home/joel: Zshell> emacs
|
| (emacs:13292): Gdk-WARNING **: Connection to display localhost:10.0 appears
| to be untrusted. Pointer and keyboard grabs and inter-client
| communication may not work as expected.
|
| (emacs:13292): Gtk-CRITICAL **: gtk_container_remove: assertion
| `GTK_IS_WIDGET (widget)' failed
|
`----

And Emacs appears but freezes after loading my .emacs.

If I do "ssh -CY ..." I get emacs freezing up with no warning messages.
