Could be GNU Emacs has not read the correct values of environment variables COLUMNS and LINES ...
The important value is COLUMNS. If it is not supplied by the shell's RC files, then launch GNU Emacs with an extra argument like '- geometry 25x50' that is suited to the screen's dimensions – in characters!
