It's my understanding that Emacs is single threaded, so is it possible
that sending/receiving or checking for new mail is blocking the process?
If so, increasing the time between checking might mitigate, but not
eliminate, the problem.
I'm running Emacs on OSX, but I don't use mail with it, and I haven't
experienced any "beach balls".
