Compilation Message encoding

Hi ...

I must have hosed my .emacs file or something, but the compilation
messages that emacs return appear to have an "encoding" issue. For
example:
globals.c:12:5: warning: function declaration isn’t a prototype
globals.c: In function ‘somefunc’:
globals.c:23:3: warning: implicit declaration of function ‘prinf’
globals.c: In function ‘main’:
I'm talking about all those "‘". How do I get rid of that? I'm
using:
GNU Emacs 23.2.1 (i686-pc-linux-gnu, GTK+ Version 2.24.4) of
2011-04-04 on rothera, modified by Debian
on an Xubuntu box.
