I run Emacs on Windows, so I downloaded and installed the GNU diff
utilities from here --
http://gnuwin32.sourceforge.net/packages/diffutils.htm
-- and added "C:\Program Files\GnuWin32\bin" to my executable path.
Then I typed "M-x diff-buffer-with-file" and . . .
. . . voila! It works perfectly. Thanks very much for the info.
