Email on Emacs and Gmail 2 step verification

I have been trying to set up Gnu Emacs 23 for reading and writing email.  I've 
tried both Wanderlust and Gnus and my first problem is getting either to work 
with 2-step verification.  I can get into imap if I turn 2 step off, but I 
really don't want to do that.

So, can emacs be made to work as a mail reader with 2-step verification and if 
so how?
