How to use unix command such as wc on a buffer

I can use a command such as wc on a file but in emacs I might have a buffer
which is not saved to a file.  so how do I apply wc to the buffer.

I tried eg m-%

wc -w

But it just returns zero.

How do I apply it to the buffer?
