With TRAMP for example you can log in to other computers and edit files there 
or perform some file exchange or use a shell on that remote system.


BTW, why are you reading this list when you don't know the GNU Emacs basics? 
They're documented in the documentation inside GNU Emacs and here in this list 
you mostly receive calls for help or reports about possible bugs. It happens 
quite rarely that GNU Emacs basics are explained hereby someone… – or two.
