Good to know this. The manual contains this:

,----[ (info "(elisp)Overview of Markers") ]
|      ;; When you are finished using a marker, make it point nowhere.
|      (set-marker m1 nil)
|           => #<marker in no buffer>
`----

Should that be changed?
