It actually is. My current email client is based on Eclipse.IMHO, Eclipse is the best IDE for Java. For other languages, I think there are better choices.
For all languages, I tend to do the heavy coding in emacs and just fix minor compiler errors in the IDE. emacs autorevert keeps everything in sync.
