I don't know if this is your problem, but Gmail won't allow you to use an IMAP client without jumping through extra hoops. See for example: http://www.ghacks.net/2014/07/21/gmail-starts-block-less-secure-apps-enable-access/ If you really want to degoogle, I recommend setting up your own mailserver :-P

I use gmail in gnus without a problem. The only thing that I had to do is to set up an application-specific password (https://security.google.com/settings/security/apppasswords) but that is because I use 2-step verification.
