Hm. I'm out of my depth here.

Try to move point (aka cursor) to one of those highlighted characters.
Then do M-x describe-char <RET>. This should show you some info about
the character; at the very bottom "There are text properties here:"
it tells you among other things which face it's displayed with.

Perhaps the name of the face tips you off towards which little djinn
is doing that.
