Well, I just found out that the problem was not the ps-to-gifs script;
actually the postscript file was broken in the first place.
Apparently all postscript files created by "lilypond -f ps test.ly" are
broken, but "ly2dvi test.ly && dvips -o test.ps test.dvi" works fine...

Yep, installing ghostscript on the second PC is probably the best solution.
