hidden timeout, only Esc key works

VirtualBox 4.1.22
grub2-2.00-15.fc18.x86_64
/etc/default/grub contains:
GRUB_TIMEOUT=0
GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT=1
GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT_QUIET=true
So I get a Welcome to Grub and then an immediate boot. Shift, space, letters,
nothing is honored to interrupt this and get me to the GRUB menu, except for
the Esc key. Is this expected? Vbox anomaly?
