Yes plex86 should be much faster than box.
Plex86 is similar to vmware in that it doesn't emulate the entire
computer and all it's hardware. It runs the OS as a program and
"virtualizes" contact with hardware.
Bochs actually emulates the hardware.
But for doing OS programming work, bochs is somewhat better in that
since everything is emulated the worst that can happen is that the
bochs program will crash (there is no way it can crash your actual
computer).
Interestingly enough the plex86 website indicates that they are
working on combining bochs and plex86 to make a faster bochs.
