I think trying to debug whether make is re-execing twice or three times
etc. using -p is not very productive.  Try using -d or one of the
--debug options; that should give you much more information about what
exactly make is doing.

As for the vpath problem, I can't really help with that with the
information provided; I don't know offhand of any reason why vpath would
be set incorrectly (i.e., I don't know of any bugs in that area).
