You have lots of whitespace after the backslash here.
Only a backslash followed immediately by a newline escapes the newline.
Backslash followed by extra spaces does not.
I highly recommend using an editor with features that will automatically
removed (or at least flag) trailing whitespace in your makefiles (Emacs
will do this for example).
