Ok. I guess there's some problem in your config then. nano has nanorc
support, your nanorc has color enabled (can you send your nanorc?).

Maybe you can run nano under strace:

strace nano foo.c 2> nano-strace

when nano opens, try to switch color on and off with meta-y, exit nano
normally and send the strace file.
