Andy Adler adapted the SuperLU package, such that it can be used within
octave. I can recommend this package, it should solve 5000x5000 systems
without problems. I use the package in my FEM package.
Find the source on http://sourceforge.net/projects/octave/ as
octave-forge

Download the octave-forge package from http://octave.sf.net. It includes
support
for sparse matrices.
