You could use sprintf to solve this problem. For example:
eval(sprintf('gset output "%s"','afilename'))
or if you are genenerating a filename with numbers in it, the command could
look like
eval(sprintf('gset output "frame%03d.gif"',frame_number))

No, it did not work.
Tried,
eval(['gset output ' fil]);
and got the following,
gnuplot> set output test1.fig
^
line 0: expecting filename
Any ideas?
