same here w/ Debian 3.0, Octave configured w/ --enable-dl
--enable-shared --enable-lite-kernel.

  "Fixed" w/

  export LD_LIBRARY_PATH="$LD_LIBRARY_PATH:/usr/local/lib/octave-2.1.46/"
