Reading a .dat file

Hi,

I have a bunch of .dat files with rows and columns of data in ASCII
format.  I want to open this file so I can access the data as if it were
one single (mammoth) matrix.  I looked at the online help manual, but I'm
not sure how to implement any of the listed functions.  Any thoughts?
