The playaudio function that is a part of Octave is fairly simplistic,
and was written almost 10 years ago when sound cards were not as
common as now.  It could probably use some work.  A set of
Matlab-compatible functions would probably be useful.  You might also
start with the audio functions available with octave-forge
(octave.sf.net).
