When you do help axis, you get

  - Function File: axis (LIMITS)
    Set axis limits for plots.

The argument LIMITS should be a 2, 4, or 6 element vector. The
first and second elements specify the lower and upper limits for
the x axis. The third and fourth specify the limits for the y
axis, and the fifth and sixth specify the limits for the z axis.

which is clear enough, but how can you, for example, let the x-axis be
automatic, and set limits for the y-axis only? I couldn't find an example of
that usage of axis.

(I'm still trying to replace all of my old gset commands with "proper
Octave.")

The only way I'm aware of doing this in Matlab is with handle graphics syntax that isn't supported in octave. If I understand correctly, part of the rationale for ripping out gset and related commands in octave was to make it easier to write a handle graphics module that could theoretically support all of that eventually. Until someone writes such a module, you are probably justified in using __gunplot_raw__ to do things like this if you need it.
